India Needs More Gemologists

22 January 2026

Gemology is the scientific study of gemstones — and a foundational discipline of the jewellery industry. Gemologists identify and grade gemstones, detect treatments, and assess value. They are the people who keep the global gemstone trade trustworthy. India accounts for about 90% of diamond cutting and polishing done worldwide, and the sector employs more than 4.6 million people. The industry grows at 5–6% annually, and with it the demand for certified gemstones and transparent trade practices. But the scale of production is not matched by the number of qualified gemologists. The increase in treated stones, the rise of international quality standards, and more sophisticated consumers have made professional gem expertise essential across manufacturing, export, retail, and certification services. Supporting gemology education is not only a career opportunity — it is a necessary step to maintaining India's global dominance in the gem and jewellery industry.
